Columba Catholic Primary School Acknowledges the Bunurong Peoples’ of the Kulin Nation as Traditional Owners and Custodians and pay respects to their Elders past, present, and emerging.
Columba acknowledges the Bunurong’s continuing relationship to the land and waterways and respects that their connection and spiritual identity are maintained through ancient ceremonies, songlines, dance, art, and living culture.
We pay tribute to the invaluable contributions of the Bunurong and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Elders who have guided and continue to guide our work.

Principal Message 23rd June 2023
As the much-awaited holiday break approaches, I wanted to take a moment to send you a special message filled with warmth, cheer, and thanks. Every ten weeks we are blessed to be able to bid farewell to school routines and embrace the magic of the holidays. I hope this message finds you bubbling with anticipation for the adventures and relaxation that lie ahead.
First and foremost, I want to express my appreciation for all your hard work throughout the semester. Your enthusiasm for learning has made our school community shine brightly. Your accomplishments, big and small, have brought great joy to many and continue to inspire us all.
Now, as the school doors temporarily close, it's time for you to unwind, recharge, and spend magical moments with your loved ones. This break is a time to embrace the spirit of togetherness and create lasting memories.
During your holiday break, I encourage you to take a step back from your daily routines and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. This break provides an opportunity for reflection and gratitude. Take a moment to appreciate the little things in life, count your blessings, and acknowledge the journey you've been on so far this year.
As you embark on this holiday break, please remember to stay safe and take care of yourselves and those around you. We eagerly look forward to your return after the break, as we continue our educational journey together. Rest assured, we have exciting plans and enriching experiences awaiting your arrival. So, make the most of this break, recharge your batteries, and return with renewed vigour and enthusiasm.
Happy June/July holidays, Columba Kids!
Warmest regards,
Andrew Greco

PULSE SURVEY - Parent Survey to HELP our school
Each term we send out a parent survey which helps us get 'the pulse' of how our parent community. Below is a link to the survey. The surveys will always be brief and will support us in creating the best possible learning environment for your children.
This survey is CONFIDENTIAL and no names or email addresses will be collected unless you provide them for us. The school will not contact you personally to discuss your responses.
This is your best opportunity to let us know how you are feeling, and your best opportunity to let us know what we are doing well and what you know we could do better.
I ask that this survey be completed by Friday 28th July.

Religious Education Reporting
Student reports were sent out this week on PAM. For Religious Education, teachers use a curriculum called To Live in Christ Jesus. This curriculum has four Strands and four Lenses.
The strands are the four areas through which content is learned and Religious Education is shared and understood.
The Strands are:
- Triune God
- The Life and Mission of Jesus
- Sacramental Church
- Christian Life and Catholic Social Teaching
The Lenses are the perspectives through which we view the Strands. The Lenses are also bodies of knowledge divided into four learning areas:
The Lenses are:
- Scripture
- Tradition
- Christian Prayer and Liturgy
- Religion and Society (Year 5 and 6 only)
Students cover the content of the curriculum To Live in Christ Jesus through an Inquiry. During the Inquiry, they are presented with a question and then over the course of 8-10 weeks they show what they know and the skills they have gained through conversation (dialogue), work samples and research (mini projects or investigations).
Reporting on Religious Education is now the same as reporting for English or Mathematics. Teachers are required to assess students on their knowledge of the content and their skills in Religious Education - they are not assessing a student’s faith. For this reason, at the end of this Semester students will be marked below standard, working towards the standard, at standard or above standard for Religious Education.

This Week's Awards
Generosity
Our value Generosity comes from RED HOUSE who is named after Fred Hollows,
Fred Hollows was like Jesus in that he loved and cared for everybody, the poor, the sick and people that needed help. He generously shared his time and talents to make our world a better place. He taught doctors around the world how to heal people’s vision and gave his time for free. He helped to raise millions of dollars so others could have a better life. He inspires us to be generous, thinking of others before we think of ourselves just as Jesus asks us.

PRIME DRINKS - NOT SUITABLE FOR SCHOOL
We are aware that some shops continue to stock PRIME Hydration Drinks. Prime is a drink made by popular YouTubers Logan Paul and KSI.
PRIME Hydration Bottles carry the label “Not suitable for children under 15 years of age”.
Columba Students are not to bring these drinks to school or consume these drinks on school grounds during school hours. If these drinks are at school, they will be collected and disposed of immediately.
What about Prime Hydrate, which doesn’t contain caffeine?
- Taken from ‘Prime Hydration may be problematic for children and pregnant women. Here's why’ Evangeline Mantzioris (The Conversation)
This drink contains branch chain amino acids, or BCAA, which the supplements industry promotes as helping gain muscle bulk. There are three BCAA: valine, leucine and isoleucine.
However, there is no evidence they provide any benefit. As such, the Australian Institute of Sport has concluded they are not an effective supplement for athletes.
Supplements in general are not recommended in children or pregnant women as they have not been tested in these groups.
Performance-enhancing sport supplements are not recommended for children and adolescents, as they are still developing physically as well as refining and improving their sporting skills.
What does the science say about BCAA?
Scientists have been investigating how BCAA affect adults. Circulating BCAA can affect carbohydrate metabolism in the muscle and therefore can change insulin sensitivity.
BCAA are elevated in adults with diet-induced obesity and are associated with increased future risk of type 2 diabetes, even when scientists account for other baseline risk factors.
Adults with obesity and insulin resistance have been found to have higher levels of BCAA. Emerging evidence suggests children and adolescents with obesity also have higher levels of BCAA, which may predict future insulin resistance, a risk factor for diabetes.
However we don’t yet know if these elevated levels of BCAA in the blood are because people are overweight or obese, or if it plays a role in them becoming overweight or obese.
The bottom line is we have clear evidence that caffeine is problematic for children and women who are pregnant and lactating. And there is emerging evidence BCAA may be also problematic.
