Ash Wednesday
Wednesday the 14th of February was a different school day with the power outage, following the wild storm from the previous night. Senior and middle classes were due to go to Ash Wednesday Mass in the morning at Saint Joseph's Iona. Unfortunately, buses were canceled because of the telecommunications outage and students stayed at school. Leadership made this decision in case of an emergency that would make it difficult to contact the parent community. Ultimately this decision led to the request to pick up students from school later that day.
For the students that remained at school, they partook in an Ash Wednesday Liturgy and received the blessed ashes. Ms. Kelly Lucas and Mrs. Rose Arhens rolled on with leading the grades through prayer, singing, and reflection. Brianna pulled a guitar out of the cupboard to play a song with the Junior's liturgy. No power, no problems!
Although the power outage made it difficult for staff to deliver their regular style of teaching, it was a good opportunity to show students that not everything goes to plan and that we can adapt and problem-solve. It was a great day for everyone to reflect on what they are grateful for - hot showers, running water, lights, communication, and technology. A great conversation to begin our Lent!
Students in 1/2M decorated their space for prayer on Ash Wednesday. Candles, disciples, some nature, and colour!
