Principal Message 24th June 2022

Dear Families
Congratulations on another wonderful term. As a parents of three primary school aged kids, I know how much work goes into each day, week and month in every family. The daily grind of having uniforms ready, lunches and drink bottles in bags, hair done, not to mention after school activities. It is hard work but we do it because we love our children. We want the best for them. We want them to be happy, confident, compassionate little people. When we send them to school after all that hard work, we trust that our teachers will care for them when they get to school, to teach them how to make friends, keep friends, bounce back when they are struggling to learn, be humble in their accomplishments and supportive of those that are sad. We trust that our teachers will support them to make good choices: forgive others that may have hurt them, teach them that they will not always get their way and that the 'team' is more important than the individual. Why else would we make the effort to send them to school?
So a big thank you from Columba to everyone out there who gets their kids to school ready to learn, that trusts us to 'teach' their children. We do not underestimate the work, care and support that our students receive from all families. I ask that you all have a restful holiday period and take time to celebrate each other. Take the time to rest and find joy in simple moments. I look forward to seeing everyone back and safe in term 3.

Resilience
Resilience is important for a child’s mental health. It is their ability to bounce back from failure, challenges, adversity and stress. It’s not something that kids have or don’t have but a skill that kids develop over time as they grow. Building resilience not only helps a child deal with current difficulties, but it also helps develop a resilient mindset that will help them deal with challenges later in life. All children are capable of working through challenges and coping with stress, but they require guidance and support from a charismatic adult role model.

“Resilience is key to addressing mental health issues. We need to allow our kids to experience adversity. There is a tendency to shield our kids because parents have become a bit over-protective.”
